Lifespan – 9-11 years – The Shar Pei has a relatively short lifespan compared to other dogs its same size.

Activity Level – Low – The Shar Pei has a low activity level. They lead a rather sedentary lifestyle. A couple of short walks each day will be more than enough for a Shar Pei to expend its limited energy.

Height –18-20 inches – The Shar Pei is a medium sized dog.

Weight – 45-60 – The Shar Pei female will weigh less than the male.

Barking – Low – The Shar Pei is a quiet breed. As a matter of fact they rarely ever bark. The only time they will usually bark is when they are worried or feel threatened.

Shedding – Moderate – They do not shed all year. The Shar Pei is known as a seasonal shedder. They will typically shed heavily in Spring and Fall, but shed very little the rest of the year.

Family Friendly- The Shar Pei breed was once a guard dog and fighting dog in China. They still have some instinctual combativeness. However, they can be a good family dog. Early socialization is very important with the Shar Pei breed. They typically bond with one person and are actually indifferent to others. Therefore, if you are looking for a dog to be “everyone in the family’s dog”, don’t count on the Shar Pei to fit that mold.

Pet Friendly –No – The Shar Pei is not pet friendly. They feel a need to always be dominant. This is an inherited genetic quality that likely comes from their days of being fighting dogs. It is safe to say that to this very day their breed is still aggressive with other dogs. The Shar Pei is also not recommended for anyone that has livestock of any sort. They also do not get along with cats at all. If you have pet cats in or around your home, the Shar Pei will not be a good fit for you. A nice way of saying it would be to say they will chase and cease cats.
